For the first time in OVS history, the girls basketball team is headed to the CIF playoffs.
The OVS girls had a pivotal win Monday against Hillcrest Christian Academy, which secured their spot in post-season play.
It was a tough battle throughout the game. At the end the OVS girls were up by two and the plan was to play defense and try to pull off the win. However, with 25 seconds left a Hillcrest Christian player made a layup to tie it up. The OVS girls then fouled twice, and Hillcrest players made just one our of four free throws.
That left OVS down by one point with 10 seconds left on the clock, and the Hillcrest girls already celebrating. However, senior Hannah Little picked up a loose ball, ran down the court and hit a shot at the buzzer that secured a one-point victory.
“The buzzer beater itself was definitely my basketball career highlight,” said Hannah. “What really made it special was that the game results were reflective of how hard our team worked throughout the whole game.”
The OVS girls got off to a uneven start to the season, winning two early contests but losing to Villanova, Newbury Park Adventist and Hillcrest Christian. However, the girls turned the season around and ended league play with a four-game winning streak.
“I feel honored to be the coach of that team, and to be able to make history,” said Ms. Wachter, the girls basketball coach. “I hope that we can build on this year and keep growing and keep getting better.”
The girls have the whole school cheering them on, and the student body is excited to see them compete in CIF. Post-season selected are scheduled to come out Saturday morning.
