OVS runners had a great showing Wednesday at their first Omega League cross country meet of the season.
Junior Kai Ishikawa earned first place in the boys race, running a time of 19:58 on a tough three-mile course at the Newbury Park Adventist Academy. A strong group of OVS boys followed Kai and helped lead the Spuds to an opening season win. The top five in that group included senior Ben Scordamaglia and sophomores Cole Huey, Drew Radford and Russell Zhang.
In her first ever cross country meet, sophomore Akyra Wachter took first place in the girls race, pacing her team to a second-place finish. Senior team captain Adele Erck, who finished in fourth place, said she was proud of the effort her fellow runners put forth.
“They all tried their best, even though for some of them it was their first meet,” Adele said. “They all can be really proud of themselves, because it was a very hard course.”
The cross country teams will be in action again on Sept. 28 when they will travel to Griffith Park for the Bell-Jeff Cross Country Invitational.
