Ojai Valley School peer tutoring is back open for business, but they’re lacking customers.
Now graduated high schoolers Chloe Ronning and Rory Liu came together during the 2024-2025 school year and began tutoring sessions to assist their peers. Countless students took advantage of the opportunity, and it seemed like a brilliant program to continue annually.
This year, students kept the tradition alive. Peer tutoring sessions have just started up again. Sadly, it seems students have forgotten about the countless benefits of attending. If they had remembered, they’d be showing up. It’s time to get the word out that peer tutoring is the sh**.
“Keeping the tradition alive is important because it’s a good resource for students to have, and it cultivates community,” dorm-student tutor Jessi Ponce Sanchez said.
Ojai Valley School is famous for keeping its students busy and constantly involved. It can become extremely difficult to stay on top of the rigorous schoolwork assigned. It has become apparent that the more academic assistance opportunities provided, the more students excel.
“I think there’s a definite correlation between having support programs and academic success,” Mr. Alvarez remarked.
The benefits of peer tutoring not only spread to the pupils, but also to the tutors themselves. While pupils receive a new perspective aside from their teachers’, tutors get extra practice on subjects they are passionate about.
This is the first year peer tutoring has been offered at times that accommodate day students, but someone is yet to show up. During Friday meeting-time sessions, Celeste Ayala and Aspen Nybakken gather and await their first attendee. Past trends have shown it’s possible to get dormers involved and excited about peer tutoring. The same cannot yet be said for day students.
“I encourage people to come to tutoring because it’s an easy way to get ahead in class and get another perspective from someone who isn’t your teacher, but knows the material,” day-student tutor Celeste Ayala said.
Teachers and students alike remain hopeful that peer tutoring will pick back up and return to the place it was at last year. If you are struggling academically, show up to peer tutoring, take advantage of the brilliant opportunities Ojai Valley School has to offer, and be grateful for the tutors who care about others’ education just as much as their own.
