The Boys Lounge has undergone an amazing transformation and has become a center for social interaction. “The new look is awesome, especially the kitchen,” said Hank Pankratz, who is one of the boy’s dorm parents, “I like the dark colors on the ground because they are a strategic move to hide any stains – a win for cleanliness.”
The change from the cafeteria to a multi-purpose lounge was less obvious. “ It’s surprising that the place we used to use as a cafeteria is changing to the boys’ lounge with an additional new kitchen,” said Ifu Kubo, a Senior at Ojai Valley School, “I am happy about it because now boys have a spot to meet up, play games, and spend quality time together. It is a twist for the residents.”
The principal, Craig Floyd, shared the history that led to this change. The history behind the change is that initially, before the 2017 Thomas Fire, the boys’ dormitory did not have a lounge in the first place. Therefore, they spent their free time in the girl’s dormitory. However, the girls’ dormitory, which was the place for such gatherings, was lost due to the Thomas fire. The current boys’ lounge was used as a cafeteria until 2021, when the new buildings were finished with construction, and the new cafeteria opened.
The donation toward the boy’s lounge was from a former student-parent, as well as additional money from Lars Kuelling, the Head of Ojai Valley School. “The new lounge is a testament to the collective effort of our community,” said Mr. Floyd, “we’ve created a space that not only looks good but also serves a purpose.”
Another major change is the kitchen. The Boys Lounge renovation is more than just a physical space; it is an opportunity for personal growth. Originally there was only a microwave to heat up food, but now there is a nice kitchen, with a new stove, countertops and an oven. Hank Pankratz said, “It gives them the opportunity to cook for themselves and be more independent. If they struggle, it’s a good eye-opener for them in the future.”
These major changes in the resident environment combine social bonding, culinary exploration, and personal development in the heart of the dorm.
