For the second consecutive year, the OVS boys volleyball team made it to the CIF playoffs.
The Spuds finished the season with a winning record of 6-3, good enough for a third-place Omega League finish and a CIF bid. OVS faced No. 1 ranked Leuzinger High School last Thursday in Lawndale, and while the Spuds did not prevail, they played three very competitive matches.
The OVS boys finished the season on a roll, rattling off six consecutive victories before dropping its final Omega League game last week.
However, in their last home game of the season, the OVS boys toppled previously undefeated Pilgrim School, earning a hard-fought victory in front of supportive fans.
It was a hard-fought battle from start to finish. The OVS boys won the first set, however, things fell apart in the second set and they began to lose focus. Pilgrim was able to win the second set, however, OVS retook the reins and won the third set, putting the Spuds one set away from victory.
The fourth set was the toughest as it was neck-and-neck the whole time.
“It was tight the whole game, both teams played very well, but I felt we had the resilience to pull through in the end,” senior and team leader Eugene Fisher said.
The game ended 3-1 with OVS handing Pilgrim its first loss of the season.
The Spuds will now travel to the South Bay region of Los Angeles County to take on the Leuzinger Olympians, who finished with a record of 11-5 and earned a second-place finish in the Ocean League. The Olympians are ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section for Division 6.
The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Leuzinger High School, 4118 W Rosecrans Ave, Lawndale, CA.
