Logan Daily was worried.
The OVS senior worked hard throughout the fall to write college essays and fill out college applications. But even so, once all his college work was done and sent, the worry set in.
What if no acceptances rolled in? What if all his work was for nothing?
But on Oct. 7, Logan could breathe again after he was accepted into California State University Sonoma, one of his top choices. He received his acceptance letter only four days after he applied.
“I really didn’t expect it at all,” said Logan, who has since also earned admission to CSU Humboldt. “[Now] I don’t have to worry about stressing my whole senior year over getting accepted to college.”
A larger-than-usual number of students are receiving early college admission offers this year.
As of November 1, which is the traditional deadline for the earliest applications, five students had already heard good news from their prospective schools, with some of those earning admission to their top-choice schools.
College Counselor Fred Alvarez said it is a bit unusual to have so many early offers of admission.
He said it is great news not only for the students earning admission offers, but also for the other seniors who are still applying, providing a sense of encouragement as they navigate through the application process.
As it stands, the 19 members of the Class of 2022 have indicated they plan to submit more than 200 applications to colleges and universities large and small, public and private, in every region of the United States, as well as Europe.
College lists include many of the University of California campuses and a number of the nation’s most-selective schools, but they also include a number of colleges and universities that focus on music, art and technology.
“It’s so great to hear so much good news so early,” said Mr. Alvarez, noting that four students have received a total of 10 college acceptances between them as of Nov. 9. “Hopefully it’s a good omen for things to come.”
Senior Paige Muller was excited to receive her first acceptance on Oct. 4 from Colorado State University — that campus was high on her list because of its stellar animal science program. But then came an offer in late October from Oregon State University, which had long been her top choice.
This past weekend, Paige committed to OSU.
“I have been wanting to go to OSU since my junior year, since my brother started and I got to see the campus for the first time.” Paige said. “ When I found out they had the major that I was interested in I was super excited.”
Erik Hately is also excited about his college prospects.
The OVS senior was the first Spud to earn a college acceptance this year, earning admission on Sept. 14 to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, his top choice. He has also applied to two other schools, but at the moment he is leaving heavily toward attending FIDM.
Erik’s favorite part about this school is its small size and location, he is also particularly fond of the LA area.
And like the other seniors who have already received good news, he said he feels a great sense of relief now that the hardest part of the college application process is done.
“It feels like there was a weight lifted off my shoulders,” Erik said.
