As the school year came to a close, Ojai Valley School’s senior project hit full throttle. The Class of 2015 came up with the idea of creating a new sand volleyball court on top of the hill, outside the girl’s dorms. The court will be a new area for dorm and day students to bond over some friendly competition.
There was some concern, however, whether the court would be completed in time for graduation, but seniors came together to make it happen.
As a highly involved student in the community, senior Ben Cassidy put every ounce of effort into this year’s project.
“We started early in hopes of finishing well before the end of the year, but after many set backs, we were fearing if we would actually finish it,” Ben said. “Recently, we have kicked things into overdrive, and it has really come together. It’s amazing what we can get done when we all work together.”
Each year, the senior class comes together to create something beneficial for the Upper Campus. These projects have included a disc golf course, improvements to the Chicken Head Trail and, most recently, the new chairs and couches in the library. Each of these projects has a positive impact on campus life, and this year’s project will be enojoyed by everyone on campus.
Senior projects give the graduating class time to bond over a mutual effort in which the outcome will make the campus better for students each year. Even though this year’s project involved a great deal of manual labor, the seniors enjoyed the opportunity to all work together for a good cause.
Senior Masaki Takamatsu worked hand-in-hand with Ben to take the lead on this project in order to finish it by the end of the school year.
“I enjoyed seeing the project getting done, one scoop at a time,” Masaki said, “Watching people having a blast playing volleyball on the court was something really special, and at that moment it felt like all of our hard work had been paid off.”
With a view of the mountainous landscape of the Ojai Valley, the sand volleyball court is an exciting and fun addition to the Upper Campus. Everyone is looking forward to getting a chance to play on the new court.
