The 30th annual Relay for Life is coming up, and OVS students are rallying to donate and participate in what this year is a 12-hour walk designed to celebrate cancer survivors, commemorate those who lost their lives to cancer, and raise money to fight back against the disease.
Last year, through donations and ceramics sales, OVS made more than $2,000 for the cause. The goal has been set at $3,000 this year, and Student Council Community Service Representative Natalia Huang is confident that the school will reach that mark.
“This year I want to try different ways of fundraising and promote people to raise more money,” Natalia said. “This year is a 12-hour event so we’re not going to have as many people as last year, but then when we take shifts we want to encourage more people to sign up and walk around the track and help the ceramics students to sell the pots.”
English teacher Terry Wilson is a breast cancer survivor and a regular contributor to the American Cancer Society.
“I’ve donated to the Cancer Society ever since I’ve basically had cancer,” she said. “I think it’s great for the school to [participate] because I think there are a lot of people connected to the school who’ve been affected by cancer one way or another.”
Relay for Life of Ojai Valley will take place on Saturday, May 30, starting at 10 a.m. Whether or not the weather complies, it will be warm and inviting on the solid track and tent-filled field. Each group pledges to have one person walking at all times. Get ready!
