It might not have been a victory, but in some ways it was better than one.
The Ojai Valley Schools girls’ soccer team played a tough game against Bishop Diego on Saturday, coming out on the short end of a 2-1 score. But that doesn’t nearly tell the story.
With five players missing, including the starting goalie, the girls battled hard to earn a 0-0 tie at the half. The Spuds made great plays all over the field, including fantastic defense by seniors Kay Johnson and Kira LaBella, and stellar work up front by sophomore Alissa Neuron and senior Rumi Way.
“As the goalie standing in, I saw some amazing connecting passes and some incredibly close shots,” said junior Danika Carver, who volunteered to step in as a goal keeper for the season.
The OVS girls sustained multiple injuries throughout the second half, leaving them down a key defender and with no subs. Bishop Diego scored two goals in the half, but junior Akyra Wachter drove in a penalty kick to cut the lead in half.
The girls take on Nordhoff today at home at Dok Smith Field. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
