In a world that is more interconnected than ever before, it is important to celebrate diversity and foster inclusion. Recognizing this need, the International Multicultural Affinity Group (IMCA) has emerged as a beacon of unity for Ojai Valley School. It aims to garner student support, bridge the divide between cultures, and foster a sense of belonging among its members.
The IMCA, which stands for International Multicultural Affinity Group, was founded by 12th graders Donahi Soriano and Mariana Thacher primarily as a response to the growing international and diverse student population at OVS.
Noticing separation between this population and the rest of the community, Mariana sought to change that. “I wanted OVS kids to be able to come together and celebrate themselves without thinking that being different was a bad thing,” she said.
“This group is honestly about making OVS feel more like home,” said Donahi.
Mariana is very excited for the introduction of the IMCA, which she believes will be very impactful.
“I’m surprised that there wasn’t [an affinity group] before this, but I’m glad I can make a positive impact in the OVS community – a community I’ve loved for so long,” said Mariana.
During IMCA meetings, the members will have group discussions to share their experiences, and each cultural subgroup will address its own issues.
They will develop an understanding of the issues that are happening around the world and provide aid to countries that have suffered natural disasters, such as earthquakes. They’ll also host social events, gatherings, fundraisers, and much more. These will be fun opportunities to get to know each other’s cultures!
As for the number of participants, IMCA is already gaining support, with notable participation from the Japanese and Mexican communities.
The goals of IMCA are ambitious and long-lasting beyond the current leadership. “I think the IMCA can really bring the community together… and I’m excited to see this affinity group flourish even after Donahi and I graduate,” said Mariana.
In its early stages, OVS’s International Multicultural Affinity Group is already making strides toward creating an inclusive and diverse school environment, and as IMCA continues to grow, it will be an essential force in shaping the future of Ojai Valley School.
Donahi encourages students to unite. “If you have a passion for making a difference, bringing diversity, and celebrating your culture, you should join,” she said.
