Three games, three wins.
OVS baseball is off to a hot start this season, taking down Fillmore High, Cate and Villanova Prep since starting spring play last month.
The Spuds opened their season at home on Feb. 17 against the Flashes from Fillmore High School. The Flashes scored all of their runs in the first four innings of play and seemed to have controlled all the momentum early.
However, OVS had a huge third inning, sparked by a two-run single from freshman infielder Liam Stevens, who would later score.
“I was very proud of the freshmen in their first game,” said senior captain Ryan Farrell. “They really stepped up in a big situation.”
OVS would add a run in the third on a RBI groundout from sophomore first baseman Sullivan Rothwell, as well as another score in the fourth via a ground-rule double from Ryan Farrell.
Up 5-4 the Spuds were able to hold the Flashes’s bats at bay. OVS’s defense stepped up big including a 6 to 3 double-play in the sixth.
“The defense stepped up in big moments for us!” Ryan said. “Overall it was a great team win for us.”
On Tuesday, March 1, the Spuds faced off against a familiar foe in the Cate Rams.
Cate jumped out to an early lead, holding a 4 – 3 edge after 2 ½ innings. However, the Spuds would tie the ballgame in the bottom of the third and then would post a three-run inning in the fourth.
The Rams added a run in the fifth and would take the lead in the sixth inning. Down one in the bottom of the last inning the Spuds would get the tying and winning runners in scoring position and freshman Keiran Walsh stepped up to plate and delivered, driving in the two runners. Final score OVS 9, Cate 8.
OVS hit the road on Wednesday, March 2, against Villanova.
The Spuds jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and never looked back. Senior Ryan Farrell started the game for OVS throwing his second complete game of the season. His line was seven innings pitched, a dozen strikeouts, walking one, and one run allowed. OVS would add 3 more runs in the 7th; Spuds 7, Wildcats 1.
The Spuds will host Villanova on Saturday, March 5, and will look to improve their record to 4-0 prior to league play opening the following week.
