For the first time in OVS history, the girls volleyball team competed in CIF playoffs.
Led by coaches Soren Stewart and Micah Sittig, the Spuds were dominant on the volleyball court this year, finishing the regular season with an impressive 7-3 record, riding a five-game winning streak to close the year.
“I’m definitely super proud to be coaching and I have to also give a huge amount of credit to Coach Sittig as well,” Coach Stewart said, “Both of us formed a sense of leadership and dedication that the girls saw and molded into their own.”
This great success was not the main goal of the 2021 women’s volleyball team; it just so happened to be a byproduct of their main goal, which was to have fun. Coach Stewart and Coach Sittig installed a different form of winning amongst the Spuds.
Mr. Stewart summed up his message.
“Winning is never giving up, never surrendering.” he said, “Yeah, that’s winning and that’s when you get out there and you guys play an amazing game of volleyball. Today, tomorrow, everyday you guys play; that’s winning.”
With a young team mainly consisting of freshmen and sophomores the Spuds turned to returning sophomore Donahi Soriano to lead the charge as team captain.
Being a leader is nothing new to Donahi, as she serves as a part of the leadership team on the hill. Donahi is one of the few second-year players on the team. Alongside the few returners the Spuds added several freshmen and volleyball newcomers.
Unfortunately the Spuds were eliminated from playoffs after a first round loss on Oct. 19 when they took on the team from Holy Martyrs Armenian School in Encino.
But even after defeat they were able to keep their heads held high and spirits upbeat because they know they will be back in playoff contention next year.
Each of the individual athletes were able to grow into their own and together they were able to create an atmosphere and a community amongst themselves off and on the volleyball court.
Because of this strong connection the Spuds were able to buy into the process and philosophy that both coaches laid out for them and have the greatest season in OVS girls volleyball history.
“Oh wow!” said Donahi, who was shocked to discover that this volleyball team was the first ever OVS women’s volleyball team to reach playoffs. “Being the first team ever to get to see (playoff experience) and our team being mainly composed of freshmen and sophomores is insane and very amazing!”
