New OVS math teacher Darcy Corson Huang knows all about boarding school.
She started boarding in high school. Her wonderful experiences at Berkshire Boarding school in Massachusetts led her to become a dorm parent.
“I went to boarding school and I had a lot of good, impactful teachers that I was really impressed by and so I wanted to be like them,” she explains with a smile on her face.
She previously taught at Besant Hill located in Ojai, Cushing Academy, and Milton academy. Both Cushing and Milton are located on the East Coast. Mrs. Corson returned to Ojai because she loves Southern California and was overjoyed that she found and got a job back in Ojai.
“I love it [Southern California]. So I came back, right,” Mrs.Corson said, “ even though I’m really East Coast I came back because this is where I want to live.”
She was working at those schools because she loves coaching. Hockey was her sport, she played in both college and high school. Being on the East Coast allowed her to teach hockey. Mrs. Corson coached hockey, field hockey, and lacrosse all at a high level. She would love to start a hockey or lacrosse team if anyone is interested.
Mrs. Corson is extremely gifted and is admired by her students for her depth of knowledge. This year she is teaching Honors Calculus, Algebra 2, and BC Calculus at OVS. She is also a study hall proctor.
“I went to Bowdoin and my degree is in chemical physics, it’s not in math, necessarily, although I’ve taken a lot of math. There’s sometimes a shortage of teachers who can teach calculus and so schools often, because I can teach calculus, put me there. I really like physical science and I really like math,” Mrs. Corson answers when asked why she’s teaching math.
Living with her at school in the Grace Hobson Smith Dorms is her husband, her two year old, and her two dogs; Rex and Bodhi. Her husband, Mr. Huang, teaches English at Villanova. Her son is named Asa and is soon to be an older brother.
As a new dorm parent at OVS, Mrs. Corson is excited to learn the ins and outs of the girls dorm, create new traditions and really become a part of the OVS community.
“I think that any activities that we can do to build community is great. I know there are traditions, every boarding school has their own traditions, sort of like culture.” Says Mrs.Corson, drawing on her boarding school knowledge,” and I am excited to get to know OVS’s tradition and culture so that I’ll be able to make more positive contributions.”
