She begins with fabric, and ends with the manifestation of herself. Everything in the middle India drags through the sewing machine, stitching meaning into every seam.
India Getty-Pruss has been sewing since she was 8, and in the 6 years since then she has all but mastered one of the most esteemed fields of art. As one of the most accessible forms of self expression, fashion’s most basic attributes are easily understandable, but its complexities are as endless as they are meaningful.
Because India has had so many years of instruction with a needle and thread, taking classes from a young age, it naturally fashion became an avenue for her self-expression.
“When I was little I always felt like I was following someone, and with fashion I have been able to do my own thing.” India explained.
Her fashion is a visual proclamation of self, ruler straight longitudes meet the complexities of color and contour in outfits that state so much while remaining entirely appealing.
However, India’s art is not limited to fabric. Her expression is not bound by medium. She started taking painting classes at just 6 years old and continues to improve that skill, spending her free time painting and drawing.
She excels in virtually all things arts based, from teaching herself how to play the guitar, to dabbling in the art of baking. In terms of fashion, not only does she make clothes. But recently, in conjunction with fellow OVS first year Piper Snowber, she has recently started a business making jewelry.
Remnants is a business built on a friendship and a common interest in fashion, the two work together and separately to create jewelry and accessories to sell on Depop, an online marketplace reminiscent of eBay for artisans.
“You can really tell she puts a lot of time and effort into her work,” Piper explained about working with India.
Piper, of course, knows quite well of India’s talent and skill as an artist, yet neither are mentioned; because for India not even the mountains of talent she has rival the devotion, the time, the energy, she puts into her art.
India hopes to pursue her fashion in the future, and has goals of going to fashion school and a career on the horizon. She explained that, despite countless hours toiling by the sewing machine in her room, fashion has remained her passion.
