In an effort to reach more readers and take a step into the modern age, the journalism class at the Upper Campus has created an online version of the On the Hill newspaper.
It was not an easy process, but one that we felt was necessary for growing our program and giving the writers a chance to display their work to as many people as possible.
“I see the electronic newspaper fulfilling two missions: one is that it provides an immediate showcase for student work and the second is that it will allow us to run longer pieces and to more immediately share that work with a much larger audience,” said journalism teacher Fred Alvarez. “I have long wanted to initiate an electronic newspaper for these reasons; I am so glad that it was the class of 2012 that was able to bring this project to fruition.”
With the design help of Upper Camper dorm parent Megan Smith and the electronic wizardry of technology director John Wickehaeuser, the online publication has been set up at https://oth.ovs.org/. The site will continue to grow as we continuously update it with stories and pictures.
Student Council also was key in the project, approving the funds that were needed to put the site together.
As journalism students, there is no greater feeling that having your name in print and knowing that your words are reaching people. With the new online version of the paper, we hope to achieve this to a new degree.
The online version allows us to publish more stories and stay even more up to date on the events and news from the school. It also gives students, faculty, parents and alumni and easier way to stay connected and up to date with the going on.
However, we will also be continuing to print a paper version of our paper. Putting together a paper version is an art and skill that takes much time and practice. It is a valuable skill that we hope will continue and remain relevant.
