24-year-old Joli Ruby takes on her first teaching job at Ojai Valley School. Although she is inexperienced, she is ambitious and is quickly gaining the respect of her students and colleagues.
In college, Ms. Ruby never planned on teaching. She attended Canisius University for her Bachelor’s degree. Her studies mainly focused on health and wellness, and her goal was to become a personal trainer.
“I love to get out and move my body. Health is really important to me,” said Ms. Ruby.
When she realized she wanted to be a teacher, she moved back to California, where she was raised. She was raised in Ventura and attended Ventura High School, where she played on her high school volleyball team. She went to the University of the Pacific for her Master’s degree in teaching.
She offered a Nutrition H block at OVS to students struggling with personal fitness and others wanting to learn more about health and wellness.
Volleyball has always been an important part of her life. She started to play at around 10 years old and continued to play D1 throughout college.
Part of the deal, when she came to OVS, was that she would teach Volleyball along with her other classes. Her students admire her skills and have a lot to learn throughout the season.
Senior, Chloe Ronning is a resident student and a volleyball team member. She sees Ms. Ruby every day and has gotten to know her well. Chloe, along with other students respect her organization and say that she is direct and to the point.
“She always provides detailed outlines of what we will be doing in class and is really enthusiastic and involved with the school,” said Chloe.
Ms. Ruby really does do it all. She teaches Nutrition H block, Volleyball, AP Stats, Business Math, Algebra 1, and math intensive. She also committed to being a resident counselor and living in the girl’s dorm. She has so many responsibilities as a first-time teacher.
“Being a resident counselor allowed me to get involved and have my own space,” said Mrs. Ruby.
Her biggest challenge so far has been establishing her authority as a young teacher. She came in expecting difficulty and made a strong impression on her students.
“People think they can get away with anything because I am younger, but I am determined to stay professional,” said Mrs. Ruby.
Her ambition is truly admirable and she seems to have found her place at OVS.
“I love coaching volleyball. It’s my whole life,” said Ms. Ruby.
