In the deeply secluded art room of Ojai Valley School, junior Ellen Liu sat at her desk for days at a time, drawing a colorful contorted snake in the shape of the numbers 2-0-1-3.
However, Ellen’s drawing has now been seen well outside the confines of the art room.
In early winter, Ellen was contracted to work on this piece by the OVS Development and Admissions offices as a way for OVS to reach beyond its borders and give greetings to those in other countries.
Her drawing was scanned, put onto an e-card (a way of sending a greeting through email), and then sent out to overseas families in China as a greeting for the Chinese New Year, which happens to be the year of the snake.
The message on the card is reassuringly simple: “With warm greetings from everyone at Ojai Valley School and best wishes to you and your family for a peaceful and prosperous new year. We may be far away but we are with you in spirit!”
The card is meant to reach out to OVS alumni and families in Asia.
“I feel kinda nervous about it,” Ellen said. “But it’s a great opportunity for me, I really appreciate it.”
