Late last month, OVS’ newly founded Book Club took a trip to the local bookstore, Bart’s Books, with the mission of finding and purchasing books for the schools’ library.
Twelve members of the club, along with librarian Mr. Brough and club sponsor Mr. Sittig, used the extra meeting time to spend a couple hours perusing the shelves of the outdoor bookstore.
When the students arrived, two boxes were set on a table. They were then given free reign to find books that they read and liked, books that interested them, or books they though might interest their peers.
By the end of the time, three boxes had been filled with 90 books. In coming weeks, Mr. Brough will go through the selections and take any out that the library already owns or that are not suitable for the school library.
The venture was a way for the students to have control over some of the reading material available to them.
“I figured that they would be good representatives of their peers and the student body,” said Mr. Brough. “ Why not let them be part of the library collection development process? The library’s for them, so why not let them have a say in what we have?”
